Picking our Puppy Socialisation Specialists for your Training
Have you become a dog ‘mum’ or ‘dad’ this Christmas?
If so, congratulations! As a responsible dog owner, you’re likely to be planning your training journey in the new year.
Just like human dogs, our canine pals don’t grow into healthy adults without support and guidance. In the wild, they would have learnt from other dogs. For domesticated dogs, we’re their family and the ones who need to teach them how to navigate the world.
Introducing the socialisation phase.
Dogs need to have a socialisation phase, just like human beings do, ensuring they get used to other people, animals and unfamiliar surroundings. A puppy which isn’t socialised can run into all kinds of issues, including being fearful or aggressive.
This phase typically occurs between 3 and 16 weeks of age, though the most crucial period is often considered to be between 3 and 12 weeks.
During this time, puppies are highly receptive to new experiences, making it an ideal time to expose them to different sights, sounds, smells, and situations in a controlled and positive manner.
Our socialisation classes in Surrey and Hampshire help puppies grow into well-adjusted, confident adult dogs.
I have an older rescue dog. Can they be socialised, if they’re nervous or aggressive?
Yes, the good news is that older dogs can be socialised. However, the process may take more time, patience, and care compared to socialising a puppy.
While puppies go through a sensitive period for socialisation between 3 and 16 weeks, older dogs are still capable of learning new behaviours and becoming more comfortable in various situations.
However, it’s important to remember that their past experiences and temperament will significantly influence the process.
