Help! My Puppy is a Nightmare: What to Do About Biting, Nipping & Chaos at Home

You were expecting cuddles, but what you have is a little rascal. Those tiny teeth hurt, and the constant biting, nipping and chewing is driving you up the wall. Sound familiar?

You’re not alone! Issues with biting are one of the most common concerns for new dog owners, especially between 9 and 18 weeks, when puppies are learning how to interact with the world (and your ankles). The good news? With the right approach, you can survive the terrible toddler stage of puppyhood, and come out the other side with a well-behaved canine.

At Canine Kids, we offer expert-led puppy training classes in Hampshire that don’t just teach obedience: they help prevent long-term behaviour issues like biting, jumping, and poor impulse control. But let’s break down what’s really going on with that snapping little snout.

Why Puppies Bite (It’s Not Just to Be Naughty)

Biting and nipping are normal behaviours for puppies, who want to explore everything with their mouths. Biting helps them:

  • Learn social boundaries

  • Soothe sore gums from teething

  • Burn off excess energy

  • Get your attention (even if it's the wrong kind!)

But without guidance, playful biting can turn into a frustrating, and even dangerous, habit. That's why it's so important to address it early, ideally during that critical learning window before 18 weeks.

How to Handle Puppy Biting at Home

Here are 5 proven strategies we teach in our puppy training classes in Hampshire to help you deal with biting in a calm, effective way:

1. Redirect the Bite

Don’t punish your puppy: redirect their attention. Keep soft toys nearby and immediately offer one when your puppy goes for your hands or clothes. This teaches what’s OK to chew and what’s off-limits.

2. Yelping? Use It Sparingly

A short, sharp ‘ouch!’ can mimic how littermates respond to rough play. But don’t overdo it: some puppies get more excited or confused. If yelping makes them even more exciteable, skip it.

3. Withdraw Attention

If your puppy bites, simply stand up, turn away, and ignore them for 10–30 seconds. This helps them learn that biting = play stops. Be consistent, or they won’t make the connection.

4. Avoid Rough Play

Tug-of-war and wrestling can encourage them to be rough, especially if they’re sensitive or a puppy with a lot of energy. Stick to calm games while you’re teaching them not to bite.

5. Keep Calm and Train On

No shouting, no physical punishment. It damages trust and rarely works. Calm, clear boundaries paired with positive reinforcement work far better. That’s why we use such techniques at our puppy training classes in Hampshire and Surrey.

When Home Training Isn’t Enough

If biting is escalating, your puppy easily reacts, or you’re just not sure what’s working, you don’t have to handle it alone.

Our puppy training classes in Hampshire are designed specifically for puppies in the 9–18 week age group. That means we know exactly how to support you through the biting phase and beyond.

In each course, you’ll get:

  • Hands-on help with puppy biting, chewing, and mouthing

  • Guidance on polite greetings (so no more jumping or nipping visitors!)

  • Support for calm play, healthy toy use, and focus skills

  • Access to trainer advice via WhatsApp if biting becomes too much between sessions

We also offer 1-to-1 puppy home visits across Hampshire for more in-depth support with biting, separation anxiety, toilet training, or night-time issues.

Why Early Puppy Classes Matter

Between 9 and 16 weeks, your puppy’s brain is like a sponge. This is when they develop emotional resilience, social skills, and habits that last a lifetime. It’s not just about obedience: it’s about shaping the adult dog they’ll become.

That’s why our puppy training classes in Hampshire are kept small (max 5 pups per group) and run by highly qualified behavioural experts. We focus on:

  • Building confidence

  • Impulse control

  • Safe socialisation

  • Preventing problems before they start
