What Actually Happens at Puppy Training Classes in Surrey? A Week-by-Week Guide

A puppy can make a bigger impact on your household than you expect. From house training and biting to recall, lead walking and socialisation, there is a lot to think about in those first few weeks.
At Canine Kids, our puppy training classes in Surrey are designed to give you and your puppy the best possible start together. Our four-week Foundations for Life Programme combines positive socialisation, confidence building and practical life skills to help puppies grow into calm, resilient and well-mannered family dogs.
Led by Puppy Behaviour & Training Specialist Karen Lockey-Kennedy, our classes are suitable for puppies aged between 9 and 18 weeks. With a maximum of five puppies per course and two experienced trainers present, we can provide plenty of individual support.
Week One: Building Confidence and Connection
The first week is all about helping your puppy feel comfortable in a new environment and teaching you how to build a strong relationship through positive reinforcement.
We introduce calm focus, engagement and simple everyday cues, while also helping puppies become more confident around new people, sounds and surroundings.
Owners also learn how to recognise their puppy's body language and support positive socialisation without overwhelming them.
Week Two: Recall, Handling and Everyday Skills
As your puppy settles into the class environment, we begin developing practical skills you can use at home and on walks.
This includes early recall training, handling exercises and confidence around situations such as grooming and veterinary visits.
We also introduce useful cues such as Leave and Drop, helping puppies develop good habits from an early age.
Week Three: Loose Lead Walking and Calm Behaviour
Week three focuses on helping your puppy learn to stay connected with you around distractions.
We work on loose lead walking foundations, polite manners around people and other dogs, and calm behaviour in stimulating environments.
Settling and relaxation exercises are also an important part of our puppy training programme, helping puppies learn that they do not always need to be busy or interacting.
Week Four: Bringing Everything Together
In the final week, we build on everything you and your puppy have learnt so far.
We practise recall, lead walking, calm focus, play skills and everyday manners, while helping you understand how to continue training as your puppy grows.
Our support does not end when the course finishes. We provide telephone and WhatsApp support throughout the programme, and we also offer one-to-one puppy training for owners who would benefit from more personalised guidance.
Our puppy training classes in Surrey are available in Camberley, Farnham, Fleet, Godalming and Northchapel. If you would like to give your puppy strong foundations for family life, we would love to welcome you to Canine Kids.
