The First 18 Weeks: What Puppy Owners Should Prioritise Before Habits Set In

The First 18 Weeks: What Puppy Owners Should Prioritise Before Habits Set In

The first few weeks of owning a puppy can feel like a whirlwind. Many people suffer from the ‘puppy blues’ as it can be harder than they anticipated. This phenomenon has become much more well-known since it’s been shared online, so the good news is that it’s less likely to take you completely by surprise. However, that doesn’t change how hard it can feel.

Between toilet training and issues with chewing or biting, to socialising and trying to understand what your puppy needs, it is easy to feel unsure about where to begin.

At Canine Kids, we know the first 18 weeks of a puppy’s life are incredibly important. This early stage is not just about teaching basic cues: it is about helping your puppy feel ready to cope with the world around them.

Our puppy training is designed to support owners throughout Surrey and Hampshire during this key developmental window. We help you build positive habits before unwanted behaviours become harder to change.

Why the First 18 Weeks Matter

Puppies learn quickly, especially in their first few months. During this stage, they are forming opinions about people, other dogs, new environments, handling, travel and everyday life. Positive, carefully managed experiences can help your puppy grow into a much more confident dog.

However, this does not mean rushing your puppy into facing the world. Good socialisation is not about overwhelming them. It is about giving them positive experiences that are suitable for their current age.

Building their Confidence Before Teaching Obedience

Many new puppy owners worry about teaching sit, stay and recall straight away. These skills are useful, but instilling confidence should come first. A puppy that feels secure and understood is much more likely to learn well.

We always help puppies build confidence at their own pace. We support them with carefully managed activities, gentle guidance and positive reinforcement. This approach is especially helpful for shy, nervous or sensitive puppies who need more space and reassurance.

We also help you understand canine body language, so you can spot when their puppy is happy, unsure, excited or overwhelmed. This makes training more effective and helps build trust between you and your puppy.

Never Rush the Socialisation Process

One of the biggest priorities during the first 18 weeks is socialisation, but it needs to be handled carefully. Letting every person or dog approach your puppy can sometimes lead to them becoming overexcited, more fearful or frustrated.

At Canine Kids, our puppy socialisation classes in Surrey help your pooch get used to other people and furry friends, without it being overwhelming.

We help puppies learn how to interact appropriately, settle around other dogs and cope with the world in a healthy way.

Preventing Bad Habits Before They Start

Puppy training during the early stage is not about perfection; it is about preventing bad habits becoming deeply entrenched.

Habits such as pulling on the lead, jumping up, ignoring their name, mouthing, barking for attention and struggling to settle can begin early if puppies do not receive the right guidance. Our reward-based puppy training classes help owners put simple foundations in place from the start.

Enjoy Small Classes With Supportive Trainers

We know every puppy is different, which is why having small class sizes is so important. Smaller groups allow us to give more individual guidance and create a calmer learning environment for both puppies and owners.

Our classes are ideal for anyone across Surrey, including those based in Camberley, Farnham, Godalming, Guildford, Fleet and surrounding locations.
