Surrey is a great part of the UK in which to bring up a puppy. It has plenty of beautiful countryside, along with busier places where you can meet fellow dog owners and fellow furry friends. There are also more dog-friendly pubs and attractions than ever before. However, before you explore Surrey with your new best friend, they will need to be properly socialised.
However, successfully socialising a puppy is not about exposing them to everything as quickly as possible. It is about giving them plenty of calm, positive experiences at a pace they can manage.

How to deal with town centres

Pushchairs, umbrellas and shopping trolleys
Busy streets
People wearing hats, uniforms or high-visibility clothing
Begin somewhere relatively quiet before progressing to busier places. Reward their more relaxed behaviour and give your puppy space if they appear worried or overwhelmed.
Livestock and countryside life
Do you live near Farnham, Godalming, Northchapel or other rural parts of Surrey? In that case, you may regularly encounter horses, sheep and cattle. Livestock socialisation should always take place at a safe distance, with your puppy on a lead.
Reward your puppy for calmly noticing animals and then returning their attention to you. They must learn that livestock are part of the environment, not something to chase, bark at or approach.
Woodland walks and new experiences
Surrey has plenty of enchanting woodland, which is a great place to introduce puppies to everything from rustling leaves, different scents, streams and more. These are likely to be some of your dog’s favourites places.
When exploring, watch your puppy’s body language throughout. Freezing, hiding, repeatedly trying to escape or refusing food may indicate that the experience is too difficult. Move further away and allow them time to recover.
