Common Puppy Training Mistakes, and How Owners in Hampshire Can Avoid Them

Common Puppy Training Mistakes, and How Owners in Hampshire Can Avoid Them

Raising a well-behaved puppy isn’t always easy. Many new dog owners in Hampshire and Surrey find themselves making the same common training mistakes, often without realising it.

Here’s what to watch for, and how Canine Kids can help you get back on track.

1. Inconsistency in Commands and Rules

One of the biggest mistakes during training a dog is inconsistency. If one day your puppy is allowed on the sofa and the next day they’re told off for it, they unsurprisingly become confused.

Dogs thrive on routine and clear boundaries. Stick to the same commands, and ensure that everyone in your household follows the same rules.

2. Overusing Treats

Our puppy training classes are reward based, so we understand that treats are a brilliant motivator. However, using them too often, or for the wrong reasons, can backfire.

Overfeeding can lead to issues with their health and make rewards seem less valuable. Remember, praise, toys or a quick play session can be just as effective. It can be best to save treats for those special moments and gradually reduce reliance on them.

3. Starting Too Late in the Day

Some owners wait until their dog is showing behavioural problems before seeking help. But the best time to start training is as early as eight weeks. Early socialisation and gentle guidance lay the foundation for lifelong good behaviour.

However, it’s vital to remember older dogs can learn news tricks; it might just take slightly longer.

4. Getting Frustrated or Impatient

Puppies make mistakes: it’s part of the learning process. Shouting or scolding can make them fearful rather than compliant. If training feels overwhelming, step back and take a break. Positive reinforcement and shorter, frequent sessions tend to be more effective.

5. Not Seeking Professional Help with Dog Training

Many dog owners we meet have been trying to tackle everything themselves. But expert guidance can make a world of difference. Our structured classes in Hampshire and Surrey provide socialisation, consistent training techniques, and personalised advice: all crucial during your puppy’s early months.

At Canine Kids, we specialise in helping Hampshire families raise confident, happy dogs. Our puppy training classes are built around positive methods, expert support, and real-life results.

Whether you’re just getting started or need help correcting a few mistakes, we’re here to guide you every paw-step of the way.
